Confirm how you will work together
Ask where the designer works, whether meetings are available, and who will handle your project. A business serving Olympia may operate from home or work remotely. The absence of a public storefront does not make it illegitimate.
Likewise, being nearby does not automatically mean someone understands your customers. Describe your business and listen to the questions they ask. A thoughtful conversation is more revealing than a city name repeated across a website.
Review examples with context
Ask to see work and to hear what the designer contributed. Personal projects, clearly labeled concepts, and older client work can demonstrate skills. Recent testimonials can add context when available, but they are not the only way to evaluate a designer rebuilding a business.

Ask the practical questions early

- Who designs and builds the site?
- What content do I need to supply?
- What does the quote include, and what costs recur?
- How do feedback, changes, and launch approval work?
- Who manages access and support after launch?
